Review and giveaway! - "Bloodlines" by Lindsay Anne Kendal

"Bloodlines" by Lindsay Anne Kendal is a YA, fiction/paranormal novel that is centered around the concepts of witchcraft and demons. It is the first book in the "Bloodlines" trilogy, which is not yet complete.

In "Bloodlines", the young protagonist Keira Jameson embarks on both a literal and metaphorical journey to disclose the secrets of her ancestors. This inquisition takes her and best friend Lily to the heart of Salem, where they find much more than they bargained for. Keira acquires a new home and a circle of friends, as well as a laundry list of enemies. Saying much more would spoil the plot!

I continue to be amazed with upcoming authors and their ability to disengage from the more common and exhausted storylines that afflict YA, paranormal fiction. "Bloodlines" definitely delivered in the realm of originality. I appreciate the time and effort that Kendal spent constructing intriguing characters and an elaborate plot. The audience was provided with extensive background knowledge, which is something new authors generally overlook. I was very fond of the historical aspect of "Bloodlines", which is what originally lead me to this novel. I have always enjoyed learning about the Salem witchcraft trials (as morbid as they may have been) and American culture during that time period. I have read a variety of non-fiction novels regarding Salem, but never a fiction novel that takes on a perspective such as this. Lindsay did an admirable job of mixing her genres and researching her facts. I found Keira and her friends' abilities to be engaging, though I did stop to wonder what Keira isn't capable of doing. So far, though she at times doubted herself, she has been able to conquer almost any obstacle or hardship -- even death. I wonder if, in the second novel, Kendal would be able to convince me that anything would be a threat to Keira and her friends. When I finished "Bloodlines", I started to feel as if Keira were untouchable...so I am interested to see how Kendal introduces future conflict. I felt most tuned in to the second half of the novel, when the pieces of the puzzle started to fall into place, and misfortunes were on the rise; I enjoyed the "battle" scenes. Lindsay Anne Kendal is skilled at illustrating scenery and action through words. I read some past reviews of "Bloodlines" which indicated fault with the editing, or sentence structure. Given that I read these reviews after I formed my own opinion, I can say that I agree only to some extent. I feel like the editing must have improved since earlier editions of the novel were released. I do agree that the sentences could flow a bit more easily (some of the dialogue felt expendable or forced also) but that is something that I feel comes with time, as a writer explores their voice. I cannot comment entirely on the character development or relationships between the characters, as loose ends are inevitable in a series -- that is part of what keeps us wanting to read the next book! I would have to finish the series to let you all know how I feel about that side of "Bloodlines".

I would personally give "Bloodlines" a 4/5 stars, based on the innovative, history-rich plot. I definitely suggest giving this novel a chance -- its a quick, nice read!

Here is a description of the book as taken from the author's website, as well as the book details from Amazon:

"Keira Jameson used to lead a normal life, she just had a gift, passed down through the generations of her family.

Now, after hearing voices, having strange dreams of others calling out to her, and her grandfather's last words haunting her, she sets out to find other families like hers. Along with her best friend Lily, the only person outside her family to know about her gift, Keira begins a hunt for her ancestors. A chance meeting with a young man, Lucian Turner, sets them on the right track, but their discoveries change the way Keira will see herself for ever more.

Fear, superstition and heritage are shaping Keira's future and she must face her enemies, even if this could mean losing her life.

She cannot escape her destiny.

Part Buffy-style horror, part tender romance, Bloodlines will have fans of the genre on tenterhooks waiting for the next installment of this gripping and hell-raising tale.

Here is a book trailer that the author has created:

Lindsay Anne Kendal is a relatively new author hailing from Droylsden, Manchester in the UK. She has a strong passion for all things gothic and fantasy. Lindsay has written a second book in the "Bloodlines" trilogy -- "Torment" (which I hope to get time to read soon!) and is currently working on the third installment: "Revelations". She has also published another YA fiction novel, "Leticia" and is also working on the second book in that series, "Betrayal". I can't wait to see what she comes up with next, as we all know I am a sucker for original, paranormal type novels.

Are you interested in learning more about "Bloodlines", or any of Lindsay Kendal's future projects? She has a wonderful, in-depth blog and a website that you can take a gander at (there is an extensive character biography for most of the characters in "Bloodlines", here). Also, she has a Facebook fan page and a Twitter account where you can connect with her! If you have a Goodreads account, Lindsay has a profile there as well.

"Bloodlines" is available for purchase on Amazon; the paperback version sells for $12.99, and the Kindle edition is a mere $3.99. At the Barnes and Noble website, I found "Bloodlines" in paperback format for $11.99.

Lindsay has generously offered three Ebook copies of "Bloodlines" to some lucky readers! These are available in Kindle, Epub, and PDF format, and will be emailed to the winners.
