Earth Balance Review

Earth Balance is a company/brand based out of Boulder, Colorado, which was introduced in 1998 by GFA Brands, Inc. Earth Balance was made to be the "all-natural sidekick" to the Smart Balance product line. They began with a simple butter spread, and they have now expanded to sell soy milk, baking sticks, mayo-alternatives, and more! Their products have become very popular and with good reason...they provide eco and health-conscious individuals with a great alternative to items we use on a daily basis in baking and cooking.

All of the products in the Earth Balance line are vegan, non-GMO, lactose-free, gluten-free, 100% plant-based, egg-free, casein-free, and have 0g of trans fat. This makes Earth Balance the obvious choice for anyone who follows a strict foot diet.

Earth Balance is committed to giving back to their environment in a variety of ways. They are non-GMO project verified, which means that they are part of the Non-GMO project; the non-GMO Project is a group of companies and individuals that are against genetically-modified organisms and seek to educate the public. Earth Balance also helps with the health of young children through the Growing Gardens and School Food Project/Lunchbox programs. They care to be part of allergy awareness programs, and to reduce the packaging of their products to lessen their ecological footprint.

Earth Balance sent me four free product coupons so that I could test some of their products and let you know what I think! I had a hard time selecting, because everything looked so delicious. For now, I picked the Creamy Coconut and Peanut Butter Spread and the Natural Buttery Spread. As I use the other two coupons, I will be sure to report back with my findings as well!

Earth Balance's Creamy Coconut and Peanut Butter Spread contains one part all-natural peanut butter and one part organic extra virgin coconut oil. It is a great spin on a classic kitchen staple! This spread is vegan, gluten-free, 100% natural, has 0g of trans fat, has expeller-pressed oils, and is non-GMO project verified. Expeller-pressed oils are oils that are removed in a natural way, using only pressure and not harsh chemicals. This spread is great for anyone looking to improve their diet with a more natural, unique peanut butter.

It contains the following ingredients: Peanuts, organic extra virgin coconut oil, agave syrup, palm fruit oil, natural flavor, and salt. Two tablespoons of the coconut and peanut butter spread are 190 calories. It contains no cholesterol, 6g of protein, 7g of carbs, 95mg of sodium, 170mg of potassium, and 17g of fat per serving.

I decided to integrate Earth Balance's Creamy Coconut and Peanut Butter Spread into my breakfast on a day that I actually had time to make it! I made very simple over-easy eggs and "coconut peanut butter" toast. I was very intrigued by the flavor when I saw the coconut peanut butter in the store, but I wasn't sure how I would feel about the coconut if I wasn't using it as a dessert item. I'm really glad I picked this Earth Balance product now! I love coconut, and it wasn't strong enough to completely overpower the natural peanut flavor. It did not feel like I was having dessert for breakfast -- for me, this was a new way to experience coconut. I have never seen a spread like this and I really loved the added punch of flavor on my toast. Having the addition of coconut oil gives this spread a slightly thinner consistency than regular peanut butter, which is nice, because that makes it more versatile and easier to use. I think this would be a great addition to smoothies or any kind of dessert!

Earth Balance's Natural Buttery Spread is a natural alternative to butter that is vegan, lactose-free, gluten free, casein-free, non-GMO, made with expeller-pressed oils, and has 0g of trans fat. It is available in 15oz and 45oz tubs. It is effective as both a toast-topper, as well as for cooking and baking. It can be spread, fried, baked, or even sauted. It is a great product for anyone who is living dairy or gluten free, or just if you're trying to be health conscious!
Earth Balance's Natural Buttery Spread contains the following ingredients: Natural oil blend (palm fruit, canola, soy bean, flax and olive), filtered water, less than 2% of pure salt, natural flavor (plant derived from from corn, no MSG, no alcohol, no gluten), pea protein, sunflower lecithin, lactic acid (non-dairy), and naturally extracted annatto for color. One tablespoon of the spread contains 100 calories, 11g of fat, no cholesterol, 100mg of sodium, 0g carbs, and 0g of protein.

I wanted to try Earth Balance's Natural Buttery Spread in two ways; I wanted to see how it tasted when spread on something like traditional butter, or how it held up in baking as a substitute for margarine. Some fake buttery products taste like chemicals, despite boasting "healthier" nutrition facts. I was happy to discover that Earth Balance's Natural Buttery Spread is, in fact, natural tasting! The first test was to use it as a flavoring by itself. For dinner the other night, while I was conducting my Dr. Praeger's review, I took out my Earth Balance spread and put some onto my plain penne pasta to create a side dish. I can say only good things about the spread...no funny after-taste, and a nice, rich flavor. For my next test, I used Earth Balance's Natural Buttery Spread in my mom's Oatmeal cookies. This was really daunting, because she uses the same recipe every week AND she sells these cookies at the local farmer's market. The flavor really needed to be spot on for the cookies to sell as well as they usually do. While I forgot to snap a picture of the cookies when they were finished (oops!), I can assure you that they tasted the same as they do every week. They did not look any different, either! I recommend Earth Balance's Natural Buttery Spread as a healthier alternative to regular butter or margarine, whether you are baking, flavoring, etc etc.

  1. I love the look of that spread - I did try soya milk in the past and wasn't so much of a fan but I wouldn't say no to trying it again sometime - thank you so much for the review :) x

  3. The Coconut & Peanut Butter Spreads both sound wonderful - and I appreciate your assessment on the sweetness - which was my first and foremost concern (we don't like super sweet, even in desserts!)

I've got very strong feeling that my Honey/Hubby would love this combination of two of his favorite flavors and will quite likely take replace his old staple, Nutella...

After reading your very helpful review - I found myself thinking about other uses for Coconut Peanut Butter - as a major ingredient in recipes - like sauces for poultry and meat, or pasta or veggies - it just sounds like a natural! Thanks!

  5. I think Earth Balance Butter spread is one of the nastiest things I have ever tasted. It is very oily and in no way tastes like butter. It leaves a very bad after taste. I don't know about their other products but I bought 3 different types of this spread (about $15 worth) and had to throw them all out. I am going to try to make my own.

Are ALL of their products Non-GMO Project verified? Doubtful. I do not believe for a second that partially hydrogenated anything is deemed "healthful." Soy is highly toxic if it is not fermented and certified organic. They also use shitty palm oil, which has been responsible for orangutang extinction and deforestation.

How is this company guaranteeing that their products to not contain genetically engineered ingredients? People MUST call the companies that are making these claims and demand to see a legally binding affidavit from their supplier stating that they do not intentionally use GE seeds. I need some sort of verification if they are making these claims while the ingredients they use are non-organic and the product itself is not Non-GMO Project verified.

Sorry, but I'm not buying it.

  8. I think that while Earth Balance did a good thing to make vegan and non gmo products they do use palm oil which is very bad and then after they were called on it instead of removing the ingredient they are trying to say it's ok to use because now the palm oil they use is verified something or other... a typical ploy - its verified by palm oil harvesting and selling companies I believe. Also the company makes Smart Balance which is a horrifyingly unhealthy product marketed to naïve consumers as a healthy diet food. A company that does that cannot be trusted. Too bad - a lot of people really want a non-exploitative cruelty free (vegan and pc) good tasting butter substitute and I'm not sure one exists.
