Yum Yum Dishes is a company that was created in 2003 by Tracy Adler, a former restaurant owner and a mother of two. Post-pregnancy, Tracy found that she was unconsciously overeating, and wanted to put an end to it. Yum Yum Dishes were created when she found the benefit of portioning out her snacks. At first, Yum Yum dishes were introduced to Tracy's restaurant, and then expanded to be sold online, to help adults and children everywhere to form healthy eating habits. First came the Yum Yum Dish (bowl), and in 2011, ceramic plates (9Plates) were introduced, and the Yum Yum Bowl received a makeover.
The Yum Yum Bowl is a 4-oz. ceramic bowl that comes in four radiant colors: bold blue, sunshine yellow, pistachio green, and cherry red. Why 4 oz.? This is the recommended serving size for all of the less-than-healthy snack foods that we indulge in. This way, children and adults can enjoy their favorite foods without having to feel guilty. Having just one Yum Yum Bowl full of a snack is a good way to practice moderation, and will keep you satisfied enough to stick with healthier eating habits. Yum Yum Bowls are sized to curb overeating, and even have cute little snap on tops so that you can bring your snacks and your healthy habits with you, on the go. They are perfect for after-school snacks or containers to bring a side dish to work for lunch. When you are done with your snack, you will find an encouraging message on the bottom of your Yum Yum Bowl: "Yum Yum time is...over!". Yum Yum Dishes are all ceramic, but are safe for your dishwasher, oven, and microwave. Hand-washing is preferred, however, to keep the integrity of the glaze that sets the ceramic. Do NOT place the plastic lid in the microwave, oven, or dishwasher.
9Plates are 9 inch diameter, ceramic plates that are also available in bold blue, sunshine yellow, pistachio green, and cherry red. They are 9 inches, because this is perfect, pre-measured size for dinner, with everything portioned out for you! Not only are you better able to control overeating, you also don't have to guess on the appropriate serving for proteins, carbohydrates, and vegetables -- 9Plates do the work for you. They are sectioned off and labeled so that you can plate out each part of your dinner. The standard sized plate in America is anywhere between eleven and thirteen inches, so you can see how a 9 inch plate would help cut down on the obesity epidemic. It is very easy to overeat, but it is also easy to follow directions and fill your 9Plate only in the appropriate sections. Yum Yum Dishes are lead free and are CCIB tested (both the clay and the glaze) before they ship out of the factory.
You can purchase one four-pack of Yum Yum bowls (4 oz. size) on the Yum Yum website here for just $24.00. You can also purchase a four-pack of the 9Plates (9 inches in diameter) for only $34.00. If you purchase both the Yum Yum bowls and the 9Plates, you get a deal -- you pay just $46.60 for both! Currently, Yum Yum Dishes are also available at the CPR Crew in Tennessee.
Yum Yum Dishes was generous enough to send me a four-pack of both their Yum Yum Bowls and 9Plates for the purpose of this review. I was super excited to receive them, because healthy eating is definitely not something that comes naturally to me. It is something that I especially struggle with during my studies...medical school leaves little time for complicated dishes or healthy cooking, thus I tended to opt out and go for the easiest thing, which usually included unhealthy take-out or snacks. The more stressed I got, the worse my diet got. I am now in the process of turning that around, using the summer to kickstart my diet and exercise plan. I have found that the Yum Yum Dishes are really a great incentive. Sometimes, we have the motivation in the far recesses of our brains, but we need that extra little thing to push us forward. Yum Yum Bowls and 9Plates have been that extra something for me. I rarely snack now, and I try to cook everything that I eat, incorporating vegetables and fruits whenever I can. However, I know that the most successful diets allow a bit of leeway -- you can't completely deprive yourself of everything that you love, or you are bound to relapse. That's where Yum Yum Bowls come in handy. I can fill up a bowl with some of my favorite snacks: chips and salsa, frozen yogurt, popcorn, cheese crackers, cereal, etc. I no longer have to feel guilty about snacking...I simply have to leave it at one bowl, and not go to get a refill. I like having it portioned out, rather than buying into those 100-calorie packs, which are sometimes just a huge waste of money. Why pay extra for something when you can portion it out yourself? You just have to practice the moderation. I also use Yum Yum Bowls on the go, bringing small snacks to class when it is in session, or bringing things to microwave if I am going to a friend's house and I want to maintain my diet.
9Plates are an awesome invention as well. The design is so cute! They are a constant reminder that the biggest part of my plate should always be VEGETABLES, and that carbs and protein together should equal the amount of vegetables I am taking in. If I didn't use the 9Plate, I would have this algorithm completely backwards, because, lets face it, who doesn't love their carbs? This is a reality check when I go to plate out my dinner. I like having structure -- I'm someone who is very plan oriented, and it helps to have a framework to follow. It is that constant reminder not to overeat. You don't even have to think about it, you just have to follow the dotted lines on the plate! I love that this is such a simple yet innovative idea, which can really help children and adults shape their eating habits. I do not use my 9Plates every night, but I make a conscious choice to use them on nights where I am cooking dishes that involve protein, carbs, and vegetables, so that I can get my portion sizes right. I think these are a staple item for any healthy eater, especially if you can use the push, like me.
