I received four Ozeri INSTAVAC Food Storage Containers with lids (8 piece set) for the purpose of this review. These containers are stackable (through nesting), which is great for saving cupboard space. The INSTAVAC containers come in four sizes: 21 Cups (5.0 liters), 12.7 Cups (3.0 liters), 6.3 Cups (1.5 liters) and 3 Cups (0.7 liters). It is safe to put them in the microwave, the dishwasher, and the freezer. They are made from shatter-proof, stain-resistant, and BPA-free plastic. They contain handles on all four sides which conveniently snap shut into grooves for a tight fit. The Ozeri INSTAVAC Food Storage Containers also contain a food grade silicon seal, and a "wave
pattern" on the bottom which keeps your food slightly elevated, so as to allow the drainage of excess juices and moisture.

What makes these containers so unique?

Their patented valve and vacuum seal! The valve on the top of the container allows you to reduce air volume in order to create a vacuum seal, without the need for pumps or motors! Lowing the oxygen content in the container make bacteria less likely to grow, so your food is able to stay fresher, longer, without spoiling. There is even a little dial on top of the valve with numbers, which allows you to keep track of the date that you put your food in the fridge or freezer. This helps ensure maximum freshness.

The steps for creating the vacuum in the Ozeri INSTAVAC Containers are easy:

  • Place any left-over food into the container (dinner, veggies, snacks, etc), lock the snapping handles into place, and make sure that your valve is in the closed position.
  • Next, you can either press your thumbs into the center of the container from both sides, or your forefingers from both hands. You should hear a whistling sound, and this presses air out of the ONE-WAY valve. You can keep pressing down onto the center of the container until you no longer hear whistling, making sure you have removed all of the air. The container will become slightly concave...this is normal. The little green vacuum indicator in the center of your valve will become concave as well.
  • Set the date on your dial so that you can keep track of when you put it in the fridge.
  • When you are ready to eat your left-overs, simply pull up on the valve lever and you should, once again, hear whistling as the air comes back into the container. The green vacuum indicator will pop back up, and then you are safe to release the handles and remove the lid.

When you use the Ozeri INSTAVAC Containers in the microwave, you just have to make sure that the valve lever is up, so that pressure is not building in the container. There is a one year warranty on this product, so if you find that it is in any way defective or is not living up to your standards, you can return it. Right now, you can purchase the 8-piece (containers and lids) set on Amazon here, for just $24.95; shipping is free if you have Amazon Prime.

I love my Ozeri INSTAVAC Food Storage Containers. I think the sizes are great, because I have one for every occasion; I like to use the largest one to store pre-cooked meals in the fridge or freezer, I like to use the medium sized containers for dinner left-overs, and I like to use the smallest container for keeping my cut up fruits and vegetables fresh for snacks at school or when I am on the run. I had never seen such a simple vacuum seal design on plastic containers before, so I was a bit skeptical of how good it would actually work for me. I was pleasantly surprised. It only took me a minute to figure out, and when I press on the center of the containers, I get all of the air out the majority of the time. I was surprised to find that my produce didn't seem to be molding quite as quickly as it usually does, and that things weren't getting so soggy because the juices were collecting at the bottom of the container. My vacuum seal holds nicely on each of the containers -- every time I take them out of the fridge and release the valve, I still hear a whistling sound. I haven't had any problems using them in the microwave or the freezer, and they have stayed relatively transparent.

The dial date on the top of the containers is genius, especially for someone who can't forget what they did ten minutes ago, let alone remember which left-overs came from which dinner that week. This way I don't have to guess, and it helps me keep track of my food so I waste less of it. I love the stacking feature for the cupboards, and how well the handles snap into place. These are truly sturdy containers that I feel comfortable putting in my car to take to parties, class, etc, without having to worry about sloshing around and spills on my seats or floor. They are heavy duty, and I have received many questions from friends about where they can get a set like this one. I would recommend this as a gift for any family, because you are really killing two birds with one stone -- great heavy-duty storage containers and increased freshness!
