"Ulysses S. Grant was President, the population of America hovered at 39 million, and the telephone was still a pipe dream, when in 1870 J. Herman Pine hung out a confectionery shingle on 8th Street above Walnut in Philadelphia and, along with his brother, sold their first batch of what they called 'Pine Brothers Glycerine Tablets.' In an attempt to relieve his own sore throat and those of his family members, Mr. Pine, a former German confectionery maker, determined that by combining the soothing natural qualities of glycerin with the healing properties of gum acacia, he could sooth and mitigate the mild discomfort of a sore throat. Add in some natural flavoring and a sweetener and voila, Pine Brothers Softish Throat Drops were born."
After over 140 years, Pine Brothers continues to manufacture the softish throat drops, with a recipe that has been altered very little. In 1930, the Pine Brothers company was sold to Life Savers, where they saw much success up until the 1970's. After a period of declining sales, Pine Brothers and their original, soothing throat drops were picked up by the former owner of Airborne, as part of the 3 Sisters Home Products. Since 2011, Pine Brothers has once again been flourishing.
The Pine Brothers Softish Throat Drops are a unique American tradition. As the name implies, they are not hard lozenges that you need to suck on entirely to relieve the symptoms of a sore throat. Instead, they have a "gummy" type texture, which you can both suck on and chew. They don't have your typical menthol or (in my opinion) gross herbal blend -- they are available in yummy flavors such as Natural Honey, Wild Cherry, and Licorice. More flavors will be coming within the next year, as well. They are sold in 2.38 oz bags, containing 32 non-wrapped drops, or in "pucks" with twist off tops, containing 26 non-wrapped drops. The pucks are really handy and innovative, perfect for carrying in your car or your purse. The packages are great to leave in the medicine cabinet.

I was lucky enough to receive a very generous quantity of Natural Honey and Wild Cherry Pine Brothers Softish Throat Drops, in both packages and pucks. Although I had to go on my temporary, unexpected blogging hiatus, I was extremely thrilled at the time to receive so many throat drops. Why? Because my immune system has always been a little rocky throughout the winter, fall, and even the spring. I constantly get colds, and I get one or two bad sicknesses throughout the year. This usually happens because I am going back to school, where I am around all sorts of people and potential bugs to catch. Since I received my Pine Brothers Softish Throat Drops, I have used three whole containers just on myself! I was unlucky enough to get a few colds here or there (complete with sore throat), as well as strep throat the week of my exams (in medical school, no less). Then, at the tail end of my vacation a week ago, my awful spring/summer allergies hit their peak with a high pollen count, and I couldn't swallow well for two days, leaving me with a very sore throat. So these drops, needless to say, have really come in handy for me!
I put the pucks in my car, my bookbag, and my purse, so that I always have one available no matter what the situation is. There is nothing worse than having a sore throat that won't budge and that irritating, ever-present tickle in the back of your throat...especially in the middle of class, when everyone is trying to listen to a lecture! I have sucked on these during class, on my way to the grocery store, and just while chilling at home. I even use them BEFORE I get a sore throat sometimes, if I feel one coming on. I put the packages in my cabinets. My favorite flavor of the two was the Wild Cherry -- they taste like candy, and I even caught my boyfriend eating some when he didn't have a sore throat! The Natural Honey are very soothing as well, especially for people who prefer a flavor that is not as strong. I actually prefer the texture of the Pine Brothers Softish Throat Drops to the traditional "cough drop". I think they would be great for older people who can't chew as well. I think children will enjoy them more also, as they are more like candy. The only thing that happened once or twice to me was getting one stuck in my teeth, but that's hardly a complaint.
How well did these work for me? Great! I thought the flavors were very soothing on my throat, even when I had strep throat. I had to try and study that week, so I just kept using one softish throat drop after another. These work as well, if not better, than your traditional cough drop. I don't miss the menthol taste; I thought not having menthol might detract from the ability to remove irritation from my throat, but it did not. I love how innovative these are, and I will definitely be buying them in the future, when I eventually run out!
