I have to apologize again for being on a mini hiatus due to life, which is why this review is so off-season. Perhaps you can pretend it is almost Christmas in July. ;) Around the holidays I was lucky enough to receive two of the seasonal Nestle/Wonka products: Wonka Original Spree Candy Canes and a large tin of Gotta-have Grape and Seriously Strawberry Nerds. The great thing about these Nestle treats is that they are affordable, especially for large families that need to budget around the holidays. They are awesome stocking stuffers, Christmas tree decorations, or holiday party favors. As you can see, all of the candy/chocolate listed above is under $10 and offers a very generous serving size to feed many mouths.
I received the Spree Candy Canes, but you can also purchase Wonka Candy Canes in SweeTARTS and Gobstopper flavors. There are twelve colorful candy canes per 6 oz package. They retail for an average price of just $2.49 and have consistently ranked in the top three brands of most highly desired candy cane each holiday season!
Spree are one of my favorite Wonka candies -- I often prefer chocolate over fruit-flavored candy, but I remember trading away some chocolate bars for Spree in my trick-or-treating days. Naturally, I thought the Spree Candy Canes tasted great (much better than your average peppermint flavor), and the few that I had left added a nice, festive touch to our Christmas tree. My only negative feedback would be the fact that, like most candy canes, these are very delicate, and one had already broken in the package before I opened them. If you decide to put these in stockings or to hand out to children, be careful to purchase a box without cracked candy canes and to handle them carefully! Otherwise, these are a nice sugary snack for the holidays. If you want to try your hand at baking with candy canes, I've seen quite a few recipes with crushed candy canes as the topping, including pies and brownies. I think the Wonka Spree Candy Canes would taste good if they made a crushed topping on a fruity dessert, such as a strawberry or blueberry pie.
Next, I received a Nestle Stocking Stuffer Tin, with grape and strawberry flavored Nerds. You can also purchase Nestle Stocking Stuffer Tins in SweeTARTS, Laffy Taffy, Baby Ruth, Crunch and 100 Grand. These come in 3.5-5.25 oz and have a standard retail price of $2.99. They feature a reusable tin with tiny treats inside, such as the packages of Nerds pictured above. As the name suggests, these are ideal for stocking stuffers. I wish that the tin had a holiday theme, but it is cute and always handy to store odds and ends in afterwards. Kids will love these! The grape and strawberry flavors of Nerds go well together.
Besides having gifts and favors, what can you create with Nestle's new seasonal candy/chocolate? They feature several scrumptious looking recipes on their website, but it was difficult to imagine what I might be able to create, baking-wise, combining both the candy canes and the Nerds. I could have created a topping out of either, but I wanted to think outside the box, to create holiday decorations, center pieces, or a more innovative favor. My mom and I put our heads together and created two adorable and simple crafts that you can make with your families, using Nestle's products.
First, we created these extremely simple candy cane heart ornaments by hot gluing two of the Wonka Spree Candy Canes together and attaching a ribbon. These are so cute for Christmas tree decorations, and, with supervision, are something that children can easily make and feel proud to hang up.
Next, we created a cute center piece or present topper. My mom is a crafter, so she has lots of little things laying around the house -- this miniature Santa being one of them. We hot glued him to a stack of Nerds and used Nestle's Spree Candy Canes to create a make-shift sleigh. Them we took a tiny plastic bag and filled it with Nerds and tied it off with a ribbon to create Santa's bag of goodies. It only took five minutes, and everyone was taken with it! This just goes to show that Nestle's treats can be used in a variety of ways, whether you are a baker, a decorator, or a crafter. For the price and the taste, you can't go wrong.
