Alternative Baking Company: Review

Alternative Baking Company

The Alternative Baking Company, Inc, was founded in 1995 in Sacramento, California. The Alternative Baking Company focuses on manufacturing baked goods which are gourmet quality and vegan; they are a tasty spin on traditional, dairy-based baked goods. Their cookies aren't just for vegans -- they are for anyone who is health conscious, yet doesn't want to compromise when it comes to dessert!

The Alternative Baking Company's cookies are unique because they contain NO eggs, milk, hydrogenated oils, dairy, trans fat, soy, or animal ingredients. Their cookies contain NO artificial ingredients, preservatives, or refined sugar. Each of their products is carefully made with organic flour and sugar (with a much higher nutritional content), as well as a handful of other natural ingredients! The fruit juice that is added into The Alternative Baking Company's cookies is a patented product which is kosher and non-GMO. The baking powder that the Alternative Baking Company uses is also non-GMO and aluminum-free. Their palm oil is not in any way affiliated with the destruction of rain forests. The Alternative Baking Company makes their cookies with love, baking only in small batches to ensure that their cookies have that homemade taste we all love. Each cookie is fresh and will enjoy a shelf life of about 6 weeks; if they are refrigerated, they can last 2-3 months.

Alternative Baking Company, Inc, offers thirteen different cookies, some of which are original and some of which are gluten-free. The cookies that aren't highlighted in this review that the Alternative Baking Company also produces are:
  •  Mac the Chip (original)
  • Explosive Espresso Chip (original)
  • Peanut Butter Persuasion (original)
  • Phenomenal Pumpkin Spice (original)
  • Outrageous Oatmeal Raisin (original)
  • Amazing Almond MuffinCookie with Anise (original)
  • Apple Pie MuffinCookie with Raisins (original)
  • Blueberry Lemon MuffinCookie (original)
  • Chocolate Explosion (gluten-free)
  • Cinnamon Burst (gluten-free)
  • Fudge Indulgence (gluten-free)
  • Lemon Dream (gluten-free)
  • Pumpkin Delight (gluten-free)

I was lucky enough to receive five awesome cookies from the Alternative Baking Company, including: Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Double Chocolate Decadence, Colossal Chocolate Chip, Luscious Lemon Poppyseed, and Cranberry Orange MuffinCookie with Walnuts.

The Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie has, per serving (2 servings per cookie), 240 calories, 9g of Fat, 9mg of Cholesterol, 75mg of Sodium, 38g of Carbs, and 5g of Protein.

The Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie contains the following ingredients:

Organic Unbleached Wheat Flour, Organic Unrefined Cane Sugar, Natural Sweetener (grape juice, rice dextrin), Peanut Butter (dry roasted peanuts), Water, Chocolate Chips (cane sugar, unsweetened chocolate, cocoa butter, anhydrous dextrose), Peanuts, Organic Palm Oil, Humectant (grape juice, rice dextrin), Egg Substitute (potato starch, tapioca flour, leavening (calcium lactate, calcium carbonate, cream of tartar), cellulose gum, modified cellulose), Vanilla Extract (pure vanilla extract, propylene glycol, natural vanillin, caramel color, water), Sea Salt (salt, magnesium carbonate), Baking Powder (sodium acidpyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate, non-GMO cornstarch, monocalcium phosphate), Sodium Bicarbonate

This peanut butter cookie has the best of both worlds -- that homemade chocolate chip taste, with a hint of delicious peanut butter. It definitely packs a punch! This cookie was gooey, moist, and melted in my mouth. I didn't want to share it with anyone, because I was really enjoying the unique flavor. This specific variety is highly addictive, so watch out!

The Double Chocolate Decadence Cookie has, per serving (2 servings per cookie), 220 calories, 8g of Fat, 0mg of Cholesterol, 60mg of Sodium, 38g of Carbs, and 3g of Protein.

The Double Chocolate Decadence Cookie contains the following ingredients:

Organic Unbleached Wheat Flour, Organic Unrefined Cane Sugar, Chocolate Chips (cane sugar, unsweetened chocolate, cocoa butter, anhydrous dextrose), Water, Organic Palm Oil, Natural Sweetener (grape juice, rice dextrin), Cocoa (processed with alkali), Humectant (grape juice, rice dextrin), Egg Substitute (potato starch, tapioca flour, leavening (calcium lactate, calcium carbonate, cream of tartar), cellulose gum, modified cellulose), Vanilla Extract (pure vanilla extract, propylene glycol, natural vanillin, caramel color, water), Sea Salt (salt, magnesium carbonate), Baking Powder (sodium acidpyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate, non-GMO cornstarch, monocalcium phosphate), Sodium Bicarbonate

The Double Chocolate Decadence definitely owned up to its name; it was decadent, and very chocolatey. I'm a huge chocolate fan, so I was really looking forward to this cookie, and I was happy to see that being "double chocolate" didn't equate to having double the calories. This cookie was a little bit on the drier side, but it was not lacking at all in flavor. My boyfriend and I both really enjoyed sharing it, and agreed that once we heated it up in the microwave, it tasted even better, and more moist!

The Colossal Chocolate Chip Cookie has, per serving (2 servings per cookie), 240 calories, 8g of Fat, 0mg of Cholesterol, 135mg of Sodium, 40g of Carbs, and 3g of Protein.

The Colossal Chocolate Chip Cookie contains the following ingredients:

Organic Unbleached Wheat Flour, Organic Unrefined Cane Sugar, Chocolate Chips (cane sugar, unsweetened chocolate, cocoa butter, anhydrous dextrose), Natural Sweetener (grape juice, rice dextrin),  Humectant (grape juice, rice dextrin), Organic Palm Oil, Water, Egg Substitute (potato starch, tapioca flour, leavening (calcium lactate, calcium carbonate, cream of tartar), cellulose gum, modified cellulose), Vanilla Extract (pure vanilla extract, propylene glycol, natural vanillin, caramel color, water), Sea Salt (salt, magnesium carbonate), Baking Powder (sodium acidpyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate, non-GMO cornstarch, monocalcium phosphate), Sodium Bicarbonate

This was my boyfriend's favorite pick of the five cookies. I did not tell him that it was dairy-free or on the healthy side before feeding it to him (I was afraid he wouldn't try it, or give me his honest opinion), and he devoured it right away. He was pleasantly surprised when I revealed the ingredients and the nutritional content. He said that the Colossal Chocolate Chip cookie was "delicious" and had a "great flavor" that went well with his almond milk.

The Luscious Lemon Poppyseed Cookie has, per serving (2 servings per cookie), 240 calories, 6g of Fat, 0mg of Cholesterol, 110mg of Sodium, 41g of Carbs, and 3g of Protein.

The Luscious Lemon Poppyseed Cookie contains the following ingredients:

Organic Unbleached Wheat Flour, Organic Unrefined Cane Sugar, Natural Sweetener (grape juice, rice dextrin),  Humectant (grape juice, rice dextrin), Organic Palm Oil, Water, Egg Substitute (potato starch, tapioca flour, leavening (calcium lactate, calcium carbonate, cream of tartar), cellulose gum, modified cellulose), Lemon Extract, Vanilla Extract (pure vanilla extract, propylene glycol, natural vanillin, caramel color, water), Poppy Seeds, Sea Salt (salt, magnesium carbonate), Baking Powder (sodium acidpyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate, non-GMO cornstarch, monocalcium phosphate), Baking Soda

This was, hands-down, my personal favorite of the five cookies that I sampled. The flavor is absolutely scrumptious! This cookie tasted even better than the lemon poppyseed muffins that I used to get fresh from the bakery inside of the store that I worked at.. and I bought them a lot, so that's saying something! I can't believe that the Luscious Lemon Poppyseed Cookie contains so much flavor and such a great texture using only dairy-free ingredients. I don't know how they do it, but this cookie doesn't taste in the least bit dry or dull. I am seriously going to search these out in local stores and coffee shops!

The Cranberry Orange MuffinCookie with Walnuts has, per serving (2 servings per cookie), 230 calories, 7g of Fat, 0mg of Cholesterol, 65mg of Sodium, 39g of Carbs, and 3g of Protein.

The Cranberry Orange MuffinCookie with Walnuts contains the following ingredients:

Organic Unbleached Wheat Flour, Organic Unrefined Cane Sugar, Cranberries (Cranberries, Apple Juice Concentrate, Sunflower Oil), Water, Natural Sweetener (grape juice, rice dextrin),  Humectant (grape juice, rice dextrin), Organic Palm Oil, Egg Substitute (potato starch, tapioca flour, leavening (calcium lactate, calcium carbonate, cream of tartar), cellulose gum, modified cellulose), Vanilla Extract (pure vanilla extract, propylene glycol, natural vanillin, caramel color, water), Baking Powder (sodium acidpyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate, non-GMO cornstarch, monocalcium phosphate) Sea Salt (salt, magnesium carbonate), Orange Oil, Baking Soda

This was my boyfriend and I's least favorite cookie, but not because it was awful! We just weren't as big of fans of the flavor combination as the rest of the cookies. I did, however, enjoy the fact that this was a "MuffinCookie" -- I felt like it added even more fluffiness and a great texture, making a "light" cookie. This would be great for people who aren't big on heavier flavors, such as chocolate and peanut butter. I have never tasted orange in a cookie before, and I think this particular flavor would taste good paired with wine and cheese at a dinner party.

The Alternative Baking Company's products are available in specialty health food stores throughout the country, as well as in many major grocery stores and coffee shops. Right now, you can also purchase the Alternative Baking Company's yummy, original cookies, here, on their website. You can purchase a variety pack of five different cookies, or you can buy five of one kind of cookie, for just $13.00; however, if you do not order a minimum of three packages (fifteen cookies), you will be charged extra, so you are better off ordering more. There is free shipping available for the United States! If you would like to purchase the Alternative Baking Company's gluten-free variety, you can click here. The gluten-free cookies will cost you $13.50 per package of five cookies, and the same ordering rules apply. The Alternative Baking Company has great customer service, so order with confidence. If you not pleased with your cookies, they are happy to assist you.

All-in-all, I was VERY happy with The Alternative Baking Company. It is so nice to have dairy-free cookie options, and not in just one flavor, but in thirteen! I have been denying the fact that I am somewhat lactose intolerant my entire life, because there are certain dairy products that I just can't give up. However, I get excited when I find substitutes for dairy, because it means less strain on my sensitive stomach. These aren't only dairy-free..they are a much better option for my health over-all. I love that I can recognize every ingredient on the list, and that I don't have to worry about preservatives and artificial ingredients. I am trying to make small steps towards revamping my diet, and products like those from the Alternative Baking Company give me hope. I don't have to give up the great flavors that accompany dessert -- I just have to find better options, such as these cookies. I won't be eating them every day, but I certainly won't feel as guilty if I have one every now and then.
