Petbrosia - Dog Food: Review & Giveaway!

petbrosia

Petbrosia is a company based out of Cincinnati, Ohio, that appreciates the uniqueness of every cat and dog, and their individual dietary needs. Petbrosia was founded after a couple decided that their Jack-Russell / Terrier-Beagle mixes had very different personalities (and lifestyles), and that one type of food was not fit for both dogs. One of their dogs was more active, and perhaps not getting all the proper nutrients, and more dog was not-so-active and prone to overeating. The owner of Petbrosia described their dog food as "not having a one-size-fits-all approach".

Petbrosia uses all of your pet's unique information to create a customized blend of cat or dog food that is all-natural and all grown, raised, or manufactured in America. Their food addresses seven areas of pet health: healthy weight (to build lean muscle and lower fat), radiant skin and coat (using Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids for shine and healthy skin), lasting energy (slow burning energy sources), healthy joints (help building strong cartilage to keep your pet more active), stronger teeth (using calcium and phosphorus to slow the formation of plaque), strong defenses (using antioxidants to boost your pet's immune system), and optimal design (prebiotics and probiotics for a healthy absorption and digestion). There are no additives, dyes or fillers included. As your pet ages, and undergoes different changes in activity level, sensitivity to allergens, or general health, Petbrosia will alter the blend of food, to guarantee that your pet is always receiving a diet which is shaped to fit their needs at that specific time. Petbrosia not only creates this food, but also a diet plan and guidelines that will assure your pet obtains everything they need.

The food that Petbrosia manufactures is of the highest quality, and meets "high standards for freshness, nutrition, and safety". They have a panel of quality control experts which test their products for nutritional content and possible contamination by bacteria. Each Petbrosia box is individually inspected before it is sent out! Compared to other brands, Petbrosia has some obvious advantages such as adding glucosamine and chondroitin to every blend, adding prebiotics and probiotics to every blend, having antibiotic and hormone-free meat or fish as the FIRST ingredient, having no byproduct meal in chicken or poultry, and having no corn, wheat, soy, or gluten. Their kibble is specially created to have "optimal absorption, resulting in smaller, firmer stools". Both cat and dog kibble are easy for your pets to eat, and keep them satisfied over a long period of time. You can read here about the benefits of salmon for dogs, which is another great ingredient.

How does it work?

Ordering from Petbrosia is extremely simple! All you have to do is answer a few basic questions, and you are on your way to creating a customized blend of food that is just right for your four-legged friend. First, you put in your cat or dog's name and breed. They have every standard breed listed, as well as mixed breed options. Next, you enter your pet's birthday (to the best of your knowledge), weight, reproductive status (fixed or not fixed) and gender. You pick from an activity level of: Working, high, moderately high, normal, moderately low, or low. Then you choose a "body condition score" on a scale of 1-9, which is kind of like the dog/cat equivalent of a human BMI. 1-2 is very thin, 2-4 is underweight, 4-6 is normal, 6-8 is overweight, and 8-10 is obese. Petbrosia gives you a way to judge this score that includes your pet's ribs, belly, waist, and muscle. You can enter specific allergy information -- corn, wheat, potato and soy are common allergens, but you can also enter your own information in this part of the process, if your pet has a unique allergy. You can also enter any other information that you would like the pet experts at Petbrosia to review before they create your specialized bag of food. There are two options to choose between for protein: free-run chicken or grain-free salmon. You can also email Petbrosia if you would like to choose a protein that is not listed.

The website uses the information that you have entered to create a customized bag of food, complete with an ingredient list, specific feeding guidelines that will fit your pet, and nutrition facts. Petbrosia takes into consideration all factors that you have entered, and will tailor the food precisely; for example, if your dog has high activity levels and a low weight, they may choose a higher calorie food with a larger serving size.

You can choose to become part of Petbrosia's dog food delivery program, to guarantee that you always have the appropriate amount in stock. In order to limit the amount of digestive issues that your pet has when switching dog food from the old brand to Petbrosia, Petbrosia recommends the following:

Day 1-3: Mix 75% old food with 25% new food.
Day 4-6: Mix 50% old food with 50% new food.
Day 7-9: Mix 75% new food with 25% old food.
Day 10: Feed 100% Petbrosia food.

Petbrosia costs just $1.77 a day, when you break it down. Their 3lb bags are $4.98 per lb and shipping is $4.95, 5lb bags are $4.49 per lb and $4.95 for shipping, 10 lb bags are $3.49 per lb and $4.95 for shipping and 20 lb bags are $2.99 per lb and $9.00 for shipping. If you choose to join the Petbrosia Gold Club, you will gain free shipping on future orders of 5, 10, and 20 lb bags of dog or cat food, scheduled delivery, and special offers. Petbrosia has also generously offered all of my readers a discount on their first purchase of dog or cat food...all you have to do is enter the promo code BRD410 when you check out!

My boyfriend and I started fostering dogs at the beginning of the year, after we moved to Maine. We fostered a dog named Lulu early in the year, and we ended up completely falling in love with her. Naturally, we decided to adopt her, and she has been such a great addition to our household! The fostering program that we were working with stated that Lulu is a dachshund mix, but they aren't quite sure what she is mixed with. As you can see from the pictures, I think she is MOSTLY dachshund. Now that Lulu has been around for several months, I decided that it was time for her to join me in conducting product reviews, and she was sure happy to oblige! Lulu loves running downstairs when she hears UPS or FedEx pull up outside, because she wants to help me open the mail, and see if she has any special treats.

I entered the following information on Petbrosia's website in order to receive a 10 pound bag of customized dog food that would fit Lulu's needs:

Pet Breed: Dachshund (Standard)
Gender: Female
Age: 4 years 3 months
Reproductive Status: Spayed
Activity Level: Moderately low
Weight: 25 lbs
Allergy Info: None
Other Info: None
Body Condition Score: 7

Lulu is not one of the most active dogs that I have ever had -- her favorite activities are sleeping, eating, getting belly rubs, and laying outside in sun patches on a freshly cut lawn. The most activity I get out of her is when I take her to the local lake (she doggy paddles around for a bit) or to the dog park (she refuses to really run when let off leash, but it does get her moving more than at home). I chose a body condition score of 7, which is overweight, because you can not easily find Lulu's ribs under a layer of fat and muscle, her belly sags a little, and her waistline looks a little round when viewed from above. The body condition score was easy to figure out when given these guidelines. I found the whole interface very easy to use, in fact, and I absolutely love all of the customized options -- I really feel like Petbrosia cares to produce the best possible food for MY dog. We chose free-run chicken as a protein.

At first, I had trouble completing my order, but that is because it was a review box, and I had to check a specific box that I overlooked. What I did not expect was the very quick and eager-to-please customer service that I received. Even though I was frustrated that I couldn't get the order to go through after several attempts, I decided to try again the following day. Before I could get to the computer to try again, Petbrosia actually reached out with a phone call (which I missed) AND an email, and told me how to fix the issue right away. I thought this was very pro-active, and gave me a great feeling about this company. Lulu's box came very quickly and was well-packed. She was so excited to open it!

Lulu's custom blend came with a little piece of paper that contained everything we needed to know. Check out the details below:

We don't feed Lulu a TON of food, and usually she only eats one bowl-full a day, but sometimes she does get a few treats or table scraps, which we should hold back on. Lulu is not picky with her table scraps, but she is particularly picky with her dog food. Sometimes the bowl will just sit there when we buy the cheapest bag at the grocery store. I also worry about what I feed her -- when I give her table scraps, it is always something that is chemical-free or homemade. I try not to buy treats that aren't manufactured here or that have unnatural or fatty ingredients. However, I don't pay a ton of attention to dog food, and I should. It is important to me to keep Lulu healthy, so I have been looking for a more affordable, healthier option with REAL ingredients. Petbrosia has this -- it has so many natural ingredients, and it makes me feel safer knowing that I can identify almost all of them. Lulu has very sensitive skin that the foster agency said comes from some sort of unidentified allergy. She bites her paws and scratches her ears and her belly a lot. They said it may have something to do with the type of food that she eats. I am happy to see that her itching has lessened already, just as we started to feed her Petbrosia. We intend to give her one cup a day, as suggested, and to cut back on snacks. I think this customized blend will really help Lulu lose a little weight and become less affected by her allergies.

An important question, of course, is does she like it? Yep! Lulu loves her new Petbrosia food, even being the picky eater that she is, so this company gets a nice gold star, and a thank you from Lulu! I would definitely recommend this company for any pet-lover who wants to try to give their cat or dog a more proper diet that is more tailored to their specific needs.

  2. Dog food has come a long way since I first had a dog!! This looks good enough for humans to eat (not that I would). Although really, a dog is part of the family so he deserves the very best.
